There are nearly 24 million Americans with diabetes and the population is growing very rapidly. Diabetes can cause serious complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney failure. The disease and its complications kill one American every 7 minutes.

Studies have shown that although many people with diabetes are aware of the complications of the disease, they are not aware of the great risk associated with these complications. Indeed, heart attack and stroke kill two out of three Americans with diabetes. Yet despite the alarming statistics, there are potentially life-saving actions individuals can take to effectively manage their diabetes.

In an effort to raise awareness of the risks of uncontrolled diabetes and help patients take the first step toward staying healthy, the Ad Council has partnered with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) to make diabetes patients more aware of their true risk for certain diabetes-related complications. The campaign encourages adult patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to speak with their healthcare providers about how to successfully managing their health and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
