The Coalition for Healthy Children's goal is to help address the obesity crisis that confronts our nation and its children. Our mission is to provide clear, consistent, research-based messages to children and parents on the importance of practicing a healthier lifestyle and offer them the means to do it.
Membership
We believe that this can be achieved by harnessing the combined strengths of:
- Corporate marketers
- the Media
- Non-profit organizations
- Foundations
- Government agencies
|
The Coalition's Members have made a commitment to the promotion of healthy living to our nation's families and have agreed to incorporate the Coalition's strategic messages into their marketing materials, which includes advertising, packaging, web sites, direct mail and ancillary communications programs.
Results of Coaltion for Healthy Children consumer research, gathered in partnership with Yankelovich Research, indicates that Americans are confused about what it means to live healthfully and that they don’t know what to do about it.
Messaging
Fighting the childhood obesity epidemic requires communicating directly to children and, just as importantly, to their parents and other adults. The Coalition has crafted messages to these audiences based on four basic communication strategies to promote healthy lifestyles:
- Physical Activity
- Food Choices
- Food Portions
- Balance between food and activity
- Set a good example for your kids
These specific messages are the results of careful research and are designed to speak to both children and adults in a way that is more likely to resonate and encourage a lifestyle change.

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. As a member of the Coalition for Healthy Children, the American Heart Association understands that leading a healthy lifestyle, which includes good nutrition and physical activity, is the best weapon Americans have to fight these diseases.
Along with the Clinton Foundation, the American Heart Association has recently committed research and resources to reverse the rise in childhood obesity and raise a healthier generation of Americans through its Alliance for a Healthier Generation effort. In addition, AHA offers families numerous tools and resources to help them lead healthy lives, including their Food Certification Program which provides consumers with an easy, reliable way to identify heart-healthy foods when shopping and AHA’s online Exercise Diary.
The Ad Council is proud to have the American Heart Association as a member of our Coalition for Healthy Children and to highlight the ways in which they are leading the way to promote the Coalition messages areas:
Focus on Setting the Example: Mom and Dad can't just talk the talk; they have to walk the walk. It is a family affair – actions speak louder than words.
